Latest Dog News...... updated November 2006
An emergency federal rule aimed at protecting a small shore bird has led to new leash restrictions for dog walkers on parts of Crissy Field and Ocean Beach. The Golden Gate National Recreation Area, a division of the National Park Service, on Friday posted signs at both locations and began warning people that they could receive minimum $100 citations for having their pets off-leash in the newly designated zones. The leash rules, which will apply from approximately July to May, when the threatened western snowy plovers are on scene, affect 0.32 miles of Crissy Field, leaving 0.99 miles for off-leash use; and 2.2 miles of Ocean Beach, leaving 2.4 miles for off-leash use, said GGNRA spokeswoman Chris Powell.
